Wolf Man (2013)

In 2012/2013 Barry van der Rijt did research on codec errors. He found a way to create abstract stills by generating those errors manually. He also found out that there is a sudden structure hidden in those stills. But what story can you tell by just using stills of codec errors? Inspired by Freud’s Wolf Man Barry went back to his childhood memories and made a short film by placing all those approximately 1000 stills in sequence, frame by frame, manually. It made Barry feel calm.

That's Life! (2010)

In 2010 Barry van der Rijt did research on degeneration of image and sound. During this research he imported a one minute film into a movie editor and exported it again. He imported the result of this export into the editor, and exported it again. And again. And again. Manually. Soon he discovered that minimal degenerationloss occured. But how many times did he have to repeat this operation before the exported film was totally degenerated? Plodding and grinding for weeks, Barry lived in total seclusion to complete this painstaking task. Almost 2400 import-export operations were needed to find the answer to his question.
